Help with a Case

The Office of Administrative Hearings is an independent agency which conducts hearings and resolves cases involving a wide variety of actions taken by different agencies or boards of the District of Columbia government.

Starting a case

Private citizens, businesses, and government agencies can start certain types of cases at the Office of Administrative Hearings.

Preparing for a hearing

Once a case has begun, many times the Office of Administrative Hearings will schedule a hearing for both parties to present their information (documents and testimony) to a judge who will decide the dispute.

Preparing for a mediation

In some cases, before a hearing is scheduled, the Office of Administrative Hearings will schedule a mediation session in which a specially-trained mediator will assist the parties to try to reach a mutually-acceptable resolution of the case.

Filing documents

There are several different ways to file documents with the Office of Administrative Hearings: in person, by fax, by email or by using the filing documents online form.

Paying fines

Fines can be paid at the Office of Administrative Hearings Cashier’s Office during regular business hours by check or money order.  Fines cannot be paid in cash or by credit card.
